Out Here, the Seasons Still Mean Something.
July arrives sunburnt and loud in the best possible way. Long days. Late nights. Country music drifting through open windows. Rodeo announcers echoing through small towns. The smell of sunscreen, whiskey, leather, campfire smoke, and dry grass warming beneath the sun.
This Month’s Word Is
Freedom.
Not the polished kind.
The lived kind.
Freedom looks different out west.
It looks like old trucks headed toward the mountains. River days with friends. Horses tied to fence posts. Fireworks over Wallowa Lake, small town parks, and spectacular shows that bring entire communities together. A handwritten map folded in the console. Kids staying out past dark. Dust on your boots and nowhere else you need to be.
This July Feels Especially Meaningful as America Turns 250 Years Old on the Fourth of July.
Two hundred and fifty years of grit, reinvention, rebellion, heartbreak, resilience, hard work, open roads, small towns, and people stubborn enough to keep believing in something bigger than themselves.
Out west, patriotism has always been part of the fabric of our communities. It’s woven into small town sporting events, rodeos, county fairs, flags lining Main Street, and moments that still give you goosebumps when the national anthem begins to play.
The kind that makes you proud to be an American and grateful to live in such a beautiful country.

July also brings some of our favorite summer traditions here in eastern Oregon.
Pendleton Whisky Music Fest returns to Pendleton with music filling the Round Up grounds beneath hot summer skies, and Chief Joseph Days arrives in Joseph, Oregon with rodeo, parades, horses, western heritage, and one of the most beautiful backdrops in the country beneath the Wallowa Mountains.
This is the heartbeat of summer out here.
And while July tends to move fast, we hope you leave room for the simple things too.
Cold drinks on the porch.
Fresh berries from roadside stands.
Windows down after dark.
The smell of cedar and sunscreen lingering on towels.
A favorite cologne worn after a day in the sun.
Candles flickering long after the fireworks end.
